Richard Budd
About Me

Richard Budd

I’ve always loved photography and I’m seldom without a camera in my hand. I studied typography and graphic design at University and began working in motion graphic and video direction. I used to collect photographs of objects, textures, signs and anything that would be useful in my work as a graphic designer. This background had fed into my photography as I know what designers are looking for in overall design, layout and shapes to make images appealing and commercial.

I am inspired by action, movement and capturing creative images. I have a broad knowledge of lighting skills and use them to create the image in camera; like drawing with light. Through my experience and fascination with how I see the world around me, I use artificial or ambient light to achieve the desired look. Whether that's using relevant light to be seamlessly sympathetic to the subject or using lighting as an obvious interrupt to contrast with the subject to tell the story. I enjoy the challenge of learning what's needed for the shot.

Photography has opened doors for me, and gets me into a variety of places and spaces. One of the most special opportunities came when I had the chance to travel through Sudan and South Sudan with a medical aid charity. There I got to spend some time among the people of the Nuba mountains, which sparked my interest in doing something to support the children's education. I started the charity Key to the Future which supports education for young people in Sudan. Started in 2012, it's an ongoing commitment for me and my personally chosen International charity.

  • It’s a creative pleasure to work with Richard Budd. He puts me at my ease, enables me to relax and feel natural in front of the camera. He never imposes things on me, but comes up with visual ideas I haven’t thought of, creating shots of real quality that convey the spirit of my magical performance.
